I came to Chapin 13 years ago because I loved what the school was and what it could be. I came to Chapin because I felt completely at home with the school’s mission and philosophy. I was drawn to the school’s warm, caring atmosphere and to its people. I was impressed by the school’s intense efforts to do what is best for children.
While I love Chapin even more deeply today, it is some of the special moments, the little things, that give me enduring satisfaction. Here are some of my favorite things:
Greeting Lower School students every morning
Shaking hands with students each morning, I get brief, often poignant snapshots of children. I hear about the lost tooth and the tooth fairy. I hear that dad or mom is out of town, how their hockey team did and all about new shoes and clothes. It is a wonderful, refreshing way to start each day.
Watching our children perform
Whether it is performing in a play or concert or delivering a Student Council speech, watching children grow in poise and self-confidence over time is a great joy. To witness the pride that children show after a job well done is most gratifying.
Observing children treating each other with respect and kindness
The child that offers to carry the books of a student on crutches, the student who comforts a friend when she is upset, the child who goes out of his way to make a new student feel welcome and accepted at Chapin – these are endearing Chapin moments.
Seeing children laugh and enjoy themselves
Learning is sometimes difficult and tough, but childhood should also be a period of joy, play and adventure. Chapin still celebrates childhood and I love the natural, spontaneous laughs of happy children.
Witnessing children who overcome great obstacles to achieve success
Whether it be learning a new position on a team, overcoming stage fright, or finally mastering a concept in mathematics, it is deeply satisfying to see children work hard to achieve a goal. I revel in their successes.
Hugs
The human touch is such an essential part of a happy and satisfying life for children and adults. Hugs have the power to lift the human spirit. We hug a lot at Chapin.
Positive, upbeat people
Life is too short to spend time around negative people. Chapin is full of enthusiastic people who love what they are doing. I get to see these people in action every day and I am fortunate to be able to work with them. It’s a real treat!
Of course, these are just a few of my favorite things about Chapin. How lucky I am to work at a school where I have so many favorite things!
