Snow and

Emergency Closings

During bad weather or in an emergency situation, Chapin will either CLOSE or have a TWO HOUR delay, opening at 10:00 a.m. Because so many of our students travel considerable distances, safety, road conditions and the availability of busing are the primary factors in our decision.  We consult with other independent and public schools and review weather forecasts in an effort to make a decision as early as possible so parents can make appropriate arrangements.

Parents are will be notified through the Honeywell Instant Alert system and should get both a call on their home phones and message on their primary home e-mail accounts. If the parents have registered, they will be notified on all the devices they have selected.

Once children have arrived, we will not close school early, however, sports, activities and the After School Program may be cancelled.

changing weather conditions

Parents who are uncomfortable with changing weather patterns in the middle of the day may pick up their children early by calling first and coming to the Front Office.

Public School Transportation

If the student's public school’s closing or delayed opening times differ from Chapin’s, then the parents are responsible for coordinating their child’s transportation to and from school.

  • If the student's public school is closed and Chapin is open, the parents need to bring their child to school.

  • If the student's public school has a delayed opening and Chapin does not, the parents also need to bring their child to school.

  • If the student's public school has a one-hour delayed opening, and Chapin has a regular two-hour delayed opening, the student MAY  ride the bus as someone will be at the school to supervise.

If a student's bus arrives early for pick-up due to extreme weather conditions, we will not release the child unless we have reached the parent or another emergency contact provided by the parent to verify transportation arrangements. If we cannot contact a parent, the student will be held at school until a parent arrives.
