Our second graders come together throughout
their year to delve into thematic studies which form the
basis of their language arts experiences and bridge to other
curricular areas. Animals/ Nature, Families, Mysteries,
The Rainforest and our infamous “Pig Week” make up a part of
the second grade curriculum, along with social studies and
science topics that cover varied areas of high interest to
second graders, from cranberries to penguins.
Second
graders also look at environmental awareness in social
studies and put their knowledge to good use in our school;
they are responsible for recycling of plastics and cans.
Science units include Weather and Weights and Balances.
Following the progress of the Iditarod dog sled race on the
Internet provides a practical application of newly acquired
computer skills. Mathematical thinking is promoted through
hands-on activities and games, along with problem solving
and computational work.
Interspersed throughout the year and
concurrent with all their learning are second grade “Spirit
Days” which include Crazy Hair Day and Pajama Day. Hard
work and lots of fun are the hallmarks of the second grade
program. |
