Armando Sosa
Weavings
Mr. Sosa recreates moments from his
childhood in Guatemala: soccer games, scenes from a bullfight, and an afternoon
by the river. Working on his hand-made looms, he weaves bright colors into
his textiles.
Combining traditional Central American motifs and contemporary
design, his textiles include both decorative and functional pieces such as
upholstery fabric, shawls, and scarves.
Mr. Sosa began spinning and dyeing cloth at the age of 8 in his
father's house in Salcaja, Guatemala, a town famous for its weavers. By the time
he was 16, Mr. Sosa had moved to Guatemala City to apprentice with an uncle and
learn the art of weaving cotton and wool.
His career in textiles and teaching the technique of weaving
has taken him from Central America to San Diego, California, to Princeton.
He has exhibited throughout New Jersey, and his weavings were recently on
display in Washington, D.C. at the Central New Jersey Arts Day. |
