Richard D. Johnson became Headmaster of Chapin School in July, 1999. In his 37 years in education, Mr. Johnson has had a wide and unusual range of educational experiences.
He spent many years in public education, serving as principal in an Eskimo community in Northern Labrador, Canada, as well as principal of three schools on the Blackfoot Indian Reservation in Montana and principal of two schools in Miles City, Montana “the cowboy capital of the world.”
Prior to coming to Chapin, Mr. Johnson’s career in independent school education began with teaching high school English and coaching at Lawrence Academy in Groton, MA and includes nine years as Headmaster of Lancaster Country Day School in Lancaster.
Mr. Johnson earned his B.A. in English from Princeton University and his M. Ed. in School Administration from the University of Virginia. He and his wife, Bobbie, live in a historic home in downtown Pennington, NJ. Their three grown children are all married and live too far away in Vermont, Texas and Seattle, Washington.
