DECADES DAY
FEATURING LANEY, LARA, AND ALEXIS
I WHIP MY HAIR, SPIRIT WEEK DAY 3

Rube Goldberg projects have been a staple at Chapin  for many years.  Student teams are required to create projects which perform an ordinary type task with the most science they can pack in.  They also have to sketch out their projects, calculate the energy expended and always seem to enjoy themselves while they are using vast brain resources to outdo the next team.  Students from every grade love to see the projects in action.
Kevin M.---Strikeout King for Charity!
Kevin is generally a man of few words.  He lets his arm do the talking when he's on the baseball field.  Recently, Kevin struck-out 17 batters from Team Delaware in a contest pitting National Babe Ruth League All-Stars.  Someone challenged the 6' 2" ace that he would give $100 to charity for every "K" that Kevin threw.  After the smoke cleared from the catcher's mitt, Kevin unloaded 17 strikeouts and felt good as his Team New Jersey did some super work defeating an always tough Delaware team.  Well done, Kevin!

Day three of Spirit Week was Crazy Hair/Wacky Hat Day and Mary and Gwen went all out to enjoy this experience.
Upper School Spring Music Concert

Everyone knows how hard most students work at Chapin, but each Spring, despite all other commitments, students answer the call to present their very best music to the parents and their school.  The sounds are remarkable and it is such a pleasure to listen to these students showcase their best efforts.  (More photos on SmugMug.)

Disney Day

The theme of Tuesday's Spirit Week was Disney, and there were a great number of creative costumes, hats, and ideas present throughout the day.  Woody is courtesy of Pixar/Disney Studios and is a registered trademark.  Maddy apparently loves Woody and Toy Story!

Owen K., from the Fifth Grade has been honored by the Conserve Wildlife Foundation of New Jersey for an award-winning painting and essay on the state's endangered and threatened species.  Owen was selected the first place winner from Mercer County in a statewide contest for fifth graders sponsored by the Conserve Wildlife Foundation.  He was asked to draw a picture of one of New Jersey's 73 endangered and threatened species and composed an essay about how the animal became endangered and what we can do to help protect it.  Owen chose the Eastern Tiger Salamander.

More information is available at www.conservewildlifenj.org

We are very proud of Owen's work!

Julia K., Class of 2012, won the NJ State Art Competition recently.  The theme was soil and conservation of the Earth and students were allowed to use any medium to portray the theme.  Julia created her masterpiece in pencil.  She will meet the Governor for lunch and a ceremony to receive a check for her efforts, along with a State House tour.  Julia will be eligible to compete nationally for additional honors.  The Chapin School community congratulates Julia for her stellar efforts, as no past Chapin student has received an award of this caliber.
Chapin Alumnus Helps Design Aurora Satellite at Michigan
When Andrew Bertino-Reibstein '04, was a student at Chapin, he was always a science and math "go-to" guy.  A member of Mr. Gingo's Tech Crew, he regularly handled audio and lighting for school productions and created a "String Theory" project for his Curriculum Project.  After graduating from Chapin, Andrew enjoyed his years at Peddie and went to Michigan as a freshman in 2008.  Andrew turned his enjoyment of science into an Aerospace Engineering major at Michigan.  His studies included helping design and build several satellites, one of which has been aloft at about 470 miles above Earth in geosynchronous orbit which monitors the elusively beautiful Aurora Borealis.  Monitoring the results with a circularly polarized set of antennas aimed at the "bird", Andrew estimates that the "M-Cubed" satellite has a useful life of about ten years and has been in orbit for about 196 days at this point.  Collecting and analyzing the information is an ongoing project, and in the meantime, Andrew has become an employee of a small aerospace firm in the Seattle area.  "Always work to improve your math", Andrew told a group of students.  It's limit is the sky and far beyond!

Alexander Kovensky, U.S. Naval Academy
Alexander Kovensky is a Midshipman for the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis and will graduate in 2013.  He stopped by to see his old teachers and say hello.  Alex graduated from high school at Canterbury School, Fort Myers, Florida before being accepted to Annapolis. If you got to see any Navy basketball games, Alex was the Head Manager of the team.  He will be enduring Marine Air-Ground Task Force at Camp Pendleton, California this summer and will be a Squad Leader his Senior year at Annapolis, in charge of a 12 man crew.  He will be a systems engineer upon graduation from the Naval Academy.  Alex loves a challenge.  Do you?  Keep working hard to improve all academic skills so that you may be able to enjoy the adventurous life!
Tim's Story

There's an old Native American idiom that says "Never judge a man until you walk a mile in his moccasins."  In Tim's case, he's walked and run a lot of miles for the Chapin Runathon this year.  As the boy with the most miles (36), you might wonder what possesses a fifth grade student to walk more than 95% of America could ever hope of walking in a single day.  "I'm doing it for my Mom."  Tim went on to explain how his mother developed cancer while his older brother, Andrew, was a fetus.  "If my mother wasn't cured of cancer, I wouldn't be here today."  His driving focus that Runathon Saturday was to make sure that his efforts were toward prevention of cancer, and to appreciate his mother.  The 63,360 strides that he took toward reaching that goal were all that much sweeter.  You've got to admire a fellow with that kind of courage.  He comes by it pretty naturally, too.  Tim's grandmother, Margaret, was a teacher and Assistant Head of Chapin for over 25 years.  Tim, we're proud of you, and the rest of the runners who each had their own special drive to be a part of this great event.
The Book Exchange

The Book Exchange is a wonderful way for students to share books that they've read and no longer need.  They turn them into the Exchange, and get points worthy of taking another great book that they haven't read.  Sarah and Grace of the Fifth Grade came up with this superb idea.
