Our second graders come together throughout the year to delve into thematic studies which form the basis of their language arts experiences as well as a bridge to other curricular areas. Animals, Nature, Families, Mysteries, The Rainforest and their Iditarod studies make up part of the second grade curriculum. This is in addition to social studies and science topics that cover varied areas of high interest for second graders, including everything from cranberries to penguins.
Second graders also look at environmental awareness issues in social studies and put their knowledge to good use in our school and beyond. Their annual Rain Forest Bake Sale helps to preserve acres of land.
Science units include Insects and Weights and Balances. Following the progress of the Iditarod dog sled race on the Internet provides a practical application of newly acquired computer skills. Mathematical thinking is promoted through hands-on activities and games, along with problem solving and computational work.
Interspersed throughout the year, and concurrent with all their learning, are second grade special activities which include the Great Pumpkin Carve-In with parents in the fall. Hard work balanced with fun is the hallmark of the second grade program.
