The Arts Curriculum provides a full spectrum of well rounded activities that encourage students to think, to analyze, to respect and to experience art in its many forms. All students participate in classes dedicated to the appreciation and promotion of the visual arts. Through drawing, painting, sculpting and application of other media, students develop fine motor skills while gaining a deeper understanding of and appreciation for aesthetic elements within their world. The Gallery at Chapin features original works by area artists. Installation pieces complement themes and techniques presented during art instruction and provide opportunities for spontaneous viewing and discussion among students.
Students in grades Pre K - 8 also participate in music instruction. Students learn techniques related to rhythm, pitch and instrumentation and develop skills in singing and song performance. Students in grades Pre K - 4 demonstrate their musical achievements through participation in seasonal concerts. Students in grades 5 - 8 enjoy additional opportunities to develop musical skills through small group and one-on-one instrumental instruction. In many cases, these students join instrumental ensembles and perform seasonal concerts.
Students in grades six through eight participate in drama class during one trimester. While drama is incorporated at the lower levels, students do not take drama class but rather participate in dramatic exploration within their studies of language arts and/or social studies.
