Instrumental Music

From Pre-K through eighth grade, students are exposed to various musical instruments.  From experimenting with recorders to hand bells, the children of Chapin learn to make music.

FIFTH GRADE BEGINNING BAND
In addition to their weekly music class, students in the fifth grade have the option of participating in Beginning Band or Chorus.  Students in Beginning Band choose to learn flute, clarinet, saxophone, violin, snare drum or trumpet.   The ensembles participate in both the Winter and Spring Concerts.

INSTRUMENTAL ENSEMBLE
Instrumental Ensemble is open to students in grades 6 – 8 who have at least one year of experience playing an instrument.  Students explore arranging and improvising while also refining ensemble skills.  Students participate in both the Winter and Spring Concerts.

JAZZ BAND
Dedicated musicians in grades 5 – 8 meet early in the morning and jam before school.  Jazz Band performs several times a year for the school community.

MUSIC LESSONS
Private music lessons are offered after school for students Pre-K – 8 at an additional cost.

Seventh graders explore “Gregorian Chants” of the Middle Ages by writing music using neumes - the precursor to modern notation - following the strict medieval rules of composition.  They then play their chants on xylophone.
