At an Emmy presentation to Mr. Rogers for a Lifetime Achievement Award, he asked if everyone there could bow their heads for ten seconds and just silently THANK someone in their life that really made a difference to them. After the ten seconds were up, there were more than a few teary eyes in the crowd. The Fifth Grade is doing something unique. They are honoring people who have made a difference in their lives BEFORE it is too late to publicly thank them. What a terrific idea! Here, Sarina thanks Mrs. Barkley, affectionately known to her as "Lula", for all that she has done to help and guide her. Pictures and more in the SmugMug! |

A Fun Family Time Together |

Judging from the look on Francesca's face, you can tell that it was a good time with the family group in Mrs. Rousseau's room. Family groups generally hold about thirteen people, interacting in ways that were not possible with our "buddy" pair-ups. Happy Valentine's Day! |

An intensive study of a subject is always difficult, but the benefits are rewarding. And so it is with the students whose projects reflect a higher level of learning and sophistication that is not possible any other way. Here, Kate B. shows off her visual project, but ask her about the Great Depression and you will come away both impressed and appreciative that these students were able to focus in on a topic so impressively. |

Farewell Mrs. Hefler! |

Though Mrs. Hefler was with us but a year and a half, each of us grew artistically and personally. Mrs. Hefler is adopting a child and needs to be a "full-time" Mom, so we are at a loss with her departure. We wish Mrs. Hefler well in her new home in California. Please come back and see us when you are in the area! |

Imagineering in Grade Five |
 |

For the past few weeks, the Fifth Grade has been studying a little about architecture in computer class with a fine product called Google Sketch Up. Students have been involved with creating their own mazes and decorating them with Egyptian themes, and this one, by Jillian is a temple designed around Ionic columns created in the program and then used again and again to make the structure you see here. Sketch Up is a free program, available from Google, that can be used in many ways across many grades and disciplines. It allows students to experiment in Computer Assisted Design (CAD) and show their work off in an animated way as well. |
