Before applying, parents are encouraged to visit Chapin, explore the school's academic and extracurricular programs, as well as discuss their child's needs. Attending an Open House or a coffee and a tour is an excellent time to do this.
Step 1. Application
Click on the Standard Application Online (SAO) link below to create an account and submit an application. There is a $60 application fee required for this application. Although there is no official deadline for applications, admission decisions are sent by March 10. To secure placement, parents are advised to apply by mid-February.
Step 2. Admission Documents
A Recommendation Form must be completed by the applicant's current teacher and a transcript must be released from the current school. Instructions regarding these documents are detailed in the Application.
Step 3. Student Visits and Testing
Please call the Admission Office at 609-986-1702 to schedule visits or to register for specific test dates.
Applying for prekindergarten explorers: Applicants have a family visit to meet the teacher and confirm program match. The evaluation lasts approximately 30 minutes. Students must be 3 by October 1.
Applying for kindergarten: Applicants visit for screening and playtime. The evaluation lasts approximately 1.5 hours. Students must be 5 by October 1.
Applying for grades 1 – 8: Applicants spend the school day (8:30 a.m. -2:30 p.m.) with students in their current grade level. Applicants visiting Chapin for the school day must bring a snack, lunch and sneakers.
Testing for grades 1 – 8:
Applying for Grade 1 - 5: Assessments are administered when the applicant visits Chapin for the day.
Applying for Grades 6 - 8: The Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT) is recommended. (For test dates and registration go to SSAT.org) Contact the Admission Office with questions about the the standardized test.
Step 4. Notification
Applicants will be notified of final decisions by March 10.
