The education of young children between the ages of 3 and 5 begins with providing a secure environment, including teachers, with a keen understanding of child development and a belief that every child is unique. Our classrooms are purposefully arranged to provide children with routine experiences in small group and larger group activities and help with growing independence. Teachers promote and maintain a warm and positive classroom experience for children to explore, develop self-confidence, and gain enthusiasm for making friendships and learning. The daily routine and activities promote purposeful interactions to foster engagement, ask questions, make connections, and support social, emotional, physical, and academic growth.
In our Explorer Programs for 3- and 4-year-old students, we provide opportunities for learning and development through co-curricular classes. Classroom teachers work closely with co-curricular teachers to continue a developmentally appropriate and thematic approach to each subject. Our students will have experiences with World Language classes (both Mandarin and Spanish), Music, Art, Library, Technology, and Physical Education. We also use field trips as a fun way to extend our classroom learning and make connections to the world around us. We offer a Before-Care Program at the beginning of each school day. During this time, children have access to cozy spaces like our “book nook” if they enjoy a slower start to their day or there are a variety of toys and materials available to them for exploration and play. At the end of the school day, our After-School Program offers extensions of our classroom themes and projects, as well as options for making and sharing a healthy snack. It also allows children more opportunities to make friendships between classes at Chapin School, as our Explorers classes are joined by some Kindergarten students. All children should be fully capable of both expressing the need to use the bathroom and using the bathroom on their own.
