Our Discovery Program provides students in Grades 5-8 with opportunities to expand their learning outside of the normal, rigorous Chapin curriculum and explore new modes of educational experience. The Discovery classes are created and taught by teachers who are pursuing their own passion and expertise on a subject not covered in their subject area. Some of the classes run all year, some are trimester long, and new ones are added as the year progresses. A sample of choices from the 2022 fall trimester include the following:
Bridge Building: Work in pairs to build a toothpick bridge and then test it to see if you can beat the 47 pound Chapin record.
Science Olympiad: Come explore what it means to be part of the Science Olympiad team. For students already on the Science Olympiad team, this is additional time to work on projects if they are interested.
The History of Comics: Deep dive into the history of the Silver Age of comics
Legos: Like to design and build? Use your imagination to create using Lego.
Ukulele: Learn how to play the ukulele. Gain knowledge of basic chords, strumming patterns, and reading tablature. Play a song together as a group.
Chapin Video Program: Develop, film, create, edit, and publish videos and movies across different platforms such as YouTube, Vimeo, Tik-Tok, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and whatever else. This discovery class helps build towards the *End of the Year Video* and the return of the Chapin School Princeton Film Festival. Eighth graders will need their phones to film, all other grades can use iPads
Graphic Design: Learn the basics of graphic design. Students will have the opportunity to create their own t-shirt/hoodie design. (Students will have to provide a t-shirt or hoodie.)
Instrumental Ensemble Class: This will be an opportunity for students in the Instrumental Ensemble during FLEX to have a second rehearsal.
Quiz Bowl with Mr. Myers: Students will learn how the academic Quiz Bowl operates. We will be reviewing strategies and competing against each other in a fast-paced academic competition.
Negotiation and Dispute Resolution: Students will learn the art and strategies for negotiating and dispute resolution. We will discuss the psychology and mechanics of bargaining and then apply them to various hypothetical problems.
