Writing for Human Rights
During the first half of the trimester, fifth graders explored the concept of human rights. They read The Breadwinner, by Deborah Ellis, a novel that tells the story of 11-year-old Parvana who is forced by circumstances to be the breadwinner for her family in Afghanistan during Taliban rule. Through their study of the book, students made identified human rights violations and made connections to the world around them.
As a cumulative project, fifth graders worked together to write articles related to human rights violations occurring in The Breadwinner within the context of Afghanistan. They successfully created and published their own magazine, Broken Rights.
