This morning, Chapin's parents were invited to an introduction and demonstration of Chapin’s STEAM curriculum, which spans divisions and disciplines while preparing students for an ever-changing world. From Pre-K 3 and 4-year-old Explorers to 8th graders preparing prestigious secondary schools, Chapin’s STEAM and design process program allows them to expand the way they learn, think, imagine, and create; all of which was on full display!

Chapin's Science Olympiad team put in great effort at Regionals. The team put a tremendous amount of work into the preparation. Everyone deserves a standing ovation. For each event, the top six finishers are recognized and Chapin had quite a few! Congratulations to all! Here are the final rankings:

 

Design Process and STEAM Learning was on full display this morning in 8th grade Social Studies and 7th Grade Science. Students worked on model representations of Lewis and Clark’s transportation and, in Science, building earthquake ready structures.

Our Family Group picnic and all-school recess was inside due to the 🥶 weather, but was so much fun. Chapin is a community that connects from Pre-K Explorers to our most experienced faculty member!

The Chapin Chargers just completed their Fall Athletic season, and it was full of great excitement, competitive play, team unity and sportsmanship. Chapin’s five virtues come in to play in every practice, match, meet, and game. Way to go Chargers and congratulations on another fine season.

Beginning in 2020, ESF Summer Camp will be located on the Chapin School campus. Chapin School sits on a beautiful 14.5 acre campus with over 90,000 square feet of learning spaces and state-of-the-art facilities for ESF campers, families, and team. The extensive indoor and outdoor amenities allow ESF to offer their unique blend of activities, sports and special events throughout the summer, rain or shine.

Chapin School Princeton recently became River-Friendly certified by achieving standards that encourage environmental stewardship in our local communities.

Chapin School Princeton installed a rain garden, minimized the amount of mowing of their grounds, created a pesticide-free zone for their athletic fields, and engaged their students in organic gardening.

Some Chapin faculty had the chance to be students for the day - attending ADVIS diversity workshop with 800 fellow educators at Tower Hill School and learning from folks like Tim Wise, Julie Lythcott-Haims, and Peggy McIntosh. It was a great day of learning how we can continue to make Chapin a great place for our stu

Chapin School Princeton’s 1:1 iPad program allows our students to create videos, learn how to code, write essays, design graphics, study for quizzes, annotate books, edit photos....and so much more. The iPads are not supplemental “helpers”; they are integral components of the curriculum that allow students and faculty to have a world of possibilities at their fingertips. Whether using iPads to program robots or building historic city models in the Design Lab, the iPad is a learning and creation device that allows our students to be ready for a changing world. 

This week, after much excitement and anticipation, the third graders received their iPads and are ready to start their digital learning journey.

In what will be great practice for her almost inevitable TED Talk, Chapin 8th grader Mina spoke to the Lower School Morning Meeting about perseverance: what it is, how she uses it, and how they, even as young as three, can use it in their lives. Truly an impressive and eloquent talk!

This morning, at Chapin’s first All School Meeting of the year, Mrs. Pasteris spoke about the importance of one of Chapin’s Five Virtues, Respect. This virtue can mean many things and Chapin students gave examples, such as holding the door for others and helping people down the stairs. She also brought to the stage our school leaders, Chapin’s 8th Graders (Class of 2020). They are the leaders of Chapin and the respect they show themselves and the community is a model for the younger students. 

Chapin’s Upper School has a really amazing Discovery program where students and teachers can explore new and intriguing topics. Classes vary by trimester but this Spring include Beading, Ukulele, Canoe Building, Chinese Paper Cutting, Cricket, Gardening, and many others.

The Chapin Shakesperience actors did a wonderful job on stage, earning “Spirit of the Festival" title! This is definitely due to their great ensemble work and their enthusiastic performance:)

Congratulations to Lucas Zhao for the gold medal winning in the Garden State RYC Y10 men’s saber event and Yuyang Chang for a 7th place medal.  Lucas, Yuyang, Ryan Liu, and Hadrian Lin all also qualified for the USA Fencing Summer Nationals! Congrats and Charge forward! 

After months of hard work and perseverance, Chapin had great success at the Mercer County Science and Engineering Fair! 

In only our second year of competition at the New Jersey Junior Science Olympiad, with a team of students who had never competed before, Chapin School Princeton won second place in Aerodynamics, Chopper Challenge, Cool It For Today, Egg Drop, Mystery Powder, and Balloon Car Race, third place in Clay Boat and fourth place in Bottle Music, and Roller Coaster. And, in the overall competition, Chapin won third place! Congrats on all of the perseverance through hard work.

Phoebe Lett, Chapin Princeton '05, has been podcasting and writing for the New York Times @nytimes. A terrific accomplishment and just the beginning of great things to come. Way to go Phoebe!

In the first season competing against other schools, Chapin's Fencing team has captured two very impressive victories against Princeton Day School and Newark Academy.  It's truly amazing how a young program can be so successful so quickly!

Chapin Alum Winona Guo has co-authored a book (to be published this spring) which recounts her and her co-authors’s work on race and identity through their organization “Choose”.  

For the 5th year in a row, Chapin School Princeton is a Scholastic Art & Writing Award Winning School.  Congratulations to Kai Samad, Sophie Yang, Art Instructor Mrs. Tanya Vail, Maddie Laws, Anoushka Shazam, Tommy Lee-Adler, and Renee Chan (not pictured.)

Students in fourth grade are developing skills in coding. After designing and constructing a model doghouse out of cardboard, they programmed a Dash robot to travel along a route and enter their doghouse! This was another great opportunity to practice our skills in collaboration and perseverance.

The second grade just finished a Social Studies unit on communities: rural, suburban, urban. 

As part of their mid-year switch, and as half of the students complete Mandarin for the year, Ms. Chin had her students sing and recite different songs and sayings.

This week, the fourth graders read and examined a variety of Caldecott Award-winning books, analyzing them critically to establish why the selection committee selected particular books. 

As part of their reading of The Cay, Chapin’s fifth grade attempted to understand, if only for a few moments, what life is like for those who are visually impaired.

Chapin School Princeton Upper School students competed on Saturday at the Long Island Invitational as part of their work in the New Jersey Science Olympiad. 

The importance of STEAM initiatives cannot be underestimated, and Chapin students have been learning about the lives of "STEAM Heroes"--those who used their understanding of different STEAM disciplines to achieve great things.

4th grade has been learning about human digestion, organs, functions, enzymes, and the difference between chemical and mechanical digestion. The students worked in groups to create a life sized poster using one of their friends as the model they outlined!

One of Chapin’s Three C’s is Curriculum, and so much of our curriculum is on display in the classrooms, labs, art rooms, music rooms and all of the various learning spaces at Chapin.

At this month's All-School Meeting, Mrs. Pasteris brought the entire 8th grade to the stage, and also invited the kindergarten and 1st grade to sit with them. Mrs. Pasteris explained the significance of the 8th graders putting their thumbprints on the Chapin C, and how that helps to show "who we are" and "what we do" at Chapin.

4th graders summarizing in their own words what they are reading. The art of summarizing a reading passage—of any length—is one of the most important skills a student can learn. This is one of the ways our brain processes what we hear and read, and the better the summary the better the understanding.

6th grade has also started designing bridges, using the Halloween “favorite” candy corn as the main component

Third graders design a bridge that is strong enough to hold an object while tall and wide enough to allow the DASH robot to pass through. Check back for more when construction is done and they can test their creations.

As part of their study of shapes and to get ready for Halloween, Pre-K Explorers designed and created a very spooky Halloween Pumpkin.

One of the many benefits of Pre-K through 8th Grade education is that an 8th grader can help Pre-K Explorers experiment with leaf chromatography.

As part of their study of Eric Carle, and after a lot of hard work writing and illustrating their own books, first graders read their creations to kindergarteners and faculty. Pretty amazing!

2nd grade wrapped up their study on insects this week. They learned about pollinators. As an experiment, they made sidewalk chalk flowers, then used their fingers to “fly” from flower to flower to pollinate their “own” flower. #stem #stemaboutstems #stemeducation

5th graders work on a project to connect the items that surround them—erasers, notebooks, pencils—and where in the world they are manufactured. The synchronization of the work their doing and learning about the origins of their tools, including iPads, help them understand how connected we are to the whole world.
