Sustainability

At Chapin, we take our environmental responsibility seriously.  We recently installed solar panels to provide much of the school's electricity. We grow food for our kitchen in the school garden. 

Environmental responsibility is also part of how we practice our five virtues. Students practice responsibility when they sort waste and use their resources carefully.  When they work in the school garden they're showing respect for the natural world. Each time they participate in the school recycling program they demonstrate perseverance. The virtue that ties it all together is kindness, a kindness that thinks of others and how we can give back to the world around us. 

This learning is practical. We tend gardens, collect recycling, and consider where our community's resources come from in a number of subjects. We hope that students see that small choices, turning off a light, using a reusable bottle, separating waste, add up to something significant.
